The US State Department is anticipating a “record breaking demand” for passports now through 2018. If your passport is about to expire, you'll want to do it now to avoid headaches later. The Department is urging travelers to get a jump start on paperwork and passport headshots, as it will now take two weeks longer than last year, being in the ball park of six weeks renewal time. You may opt to pay a further $60 in addition to the standard renewal fee of $110, if you would like to request an expedited passport. This will take approximately three weeks to process.
International travelers should be on high alert, as many will not be allowed to enter countries if their passports expire within six months.
It is imperative that your passport photo meets certain specifications, as Passport Agencies have been known to reject cheap photos that do not fall under US State Department Guidelines.
